DIGORY KIRKE is staying with his strange Uncle Andrew in London and thinks the place is "a beastly hole" until he meets next-door-neighbor, Polly Plummer. Together Digory and Polly find their way into Narnia with the aid of magic rings made by Digory's Uncle. In later years, Digory grows up to become the Professor Kirke who appears in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.

"No fear!" said Polly. "We don't want any danger."
"Oh, but don't you see it's no good!" said Digory. "We can't get out of it now. We shall always be wondering what else would have happened if we had struck the bell. I'm not going home to be driven mad by always thinking of that. No fear!"
